The days have absolutely flown, since I arrived in the States. Firstly, a day is regained due to a 14 hour time difference, which makes you feel like you're in one of those Hollywood movies, that give you a chance to repeat your day all over and wind back time: literally.
The first week, was spent in New York City- the days just went by so fast, going to bed extremely late in the morning most days, felt the norm, partially due to the massive time difference and also due to the vibe you feel amongst the streets, it is the city that never sleeps.
The days were spent in the glorious sunshine, being the typical tourist, taking snapshots here, there and everywhere of the amazing city. The busy hours were spent visiting the statue of liberty, bike riding in central park, shopping in Soho, eating out at Chinatown and Little Italy and having some drinks downtown.
Americans are so friendly (the exception being the two woman who yelled at us at the Amtrak station because we were a second away from missing our train) and will often help you out with anything.
Tipping is becoming second nature (sometimes an inconveniencee) , however adding on tax can be misleading, as you head to the counter, thinking you've scored a bargain to realise you haven't factored in tax.
The fashion is incredibly interesting and the people of New York City definitely display an array of varied fashion sense. The shopping is fantastic, the city does have a rule, in which clothing items under $50 are not taxed on- (another reason to buy) . However, from my observations Australia is definitely on trend with the American fashion scene, as they definitely appear to be behind the European trends. The continuous strong dollar, just makes it even better to shop! ( almost certain I have now settled my case.)
My only dislike about America so far, is the food. Yes, I am quite a picky eater (vegetarian, wheat free) but wow, I do miss home cooking. Everywhere you go the meal sizes are HUGE and generally layered with some sort of fat, cheese, salt or sugar. There are great healthy grocers around, but the health food is nearly double in price. Everything is sold in large portions too; from washing machine powder to chocolate bars and chips; what are you meant to do if you are just after a single serve?
So this has been my amazing experience so far, I have loved every minute and my travel companions Georgie and Lisa, have been so much fun in sharing all this with. After the completion of college in Buffalo (which I will shortly post on), Georgie and I are heading back to the city, to meet Lisa and spend our very first white Christmas and New Years together!
Well another week has gone. Are you settling in and how are classes going?
